Crystal Palace secured the first European trophy in the club’s history after defeating Rayo Vallecano 1-0 in the UEFA Conference League final in Leipzig on Wednesday night.
French striker Jean-Philippe Mateta scored the decisive goal early in the second half as Palace completed a memorable European campaign and booked a place in next season’s UEFA Europa League.
The breakthrough came in the 51st minute after goalkeeper Augusto Batalla parried a shot from Adam Wharton, with Mateta reacting quickest to convert from close range.
The victory marked a historic moment for the South London club, which had never previously won a European title. It also capped a successful spell under outgoing manager Oliver Glasner, who leaves after guiding Palace to one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.
Glasner departs having led Palace to the FA Cup title, Community Shield success and now continental silverware during his tenure.
Palace survived late pressure from Rayo Vallecano, who were also appearing in their first major European final. The Spanish side created several opportunities, with Yeremy Pino striking the woodwork during a tense second half, but Palace’s defence held firm to preserve the lead.
The match was briefly halted in the first half due to a medical emergency involving a supporter in the stands before play later resumed.
Mateta’s winning goal also completed a personal redemption story for the forward, whose proposed move to AC Milan reportedly collapsed in January after concerns over a knee issue during a medical assessment. Despite speculation surrounding his future, the striker remained at Palace and delivered the club’s biggest goal on the European stage.
Both clubs entered the final seeking their first European trophy, with Palace overcoming Shakhtar Donetsk in the semi-finals while Rayo Vallecano eliminated Strasbourg to reach Leipzig.
The win guarantees Crystal Palace qualification for next season’s UEFA Europa League having finished in 15th position in the English Premier League table.
