Jayden Nelson Recalled as Marcelo Flores Injury Opens World Cup Door for Canada

Canada have made a late change to their 2026 FIFA World Cup squad after Jayden Nelson was called up to replace injured attacker Marcelo Flores.
Nelson, who initially missed out on Jesse Marsch’s final selection, has remained part of the national team setup throughout the build-up to the tournament. The Austin FC winger has been involved in both pre-World Cup friendlies, showing strong form and commitment to the squad.
He marked his presence with a goal in Canada’s 2-0 victory over Uzbekistan before featuring as a second-half substitute in the 1-1 draw against Ireland, further strengthening his case for inclusion.
The opportunity comes after Marcelo Flores suffered a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury on May 30 while playing for Tigres in the Concacaf Champions Cup final. The Mexico-born attacker subsequently underwent successful surgery on June 5, ruling him out of the World Cup.
In a statement confirming the change, Canada’s coaching staff explained that Flores was not medically fit to continue in the tournament preparations, opening the door for Nelson’s inclusion.
Nelson brings versatility and pace to the squad, having been used across multiple attacking roles throughout his career, including left wing, right wing, and attacking midfield. His adaptability is expected to be valuable for Canada during the tournament.
The 23-year-old has also impressed at club level with Austin FC, where he has maintained a strong attacking output and demonstrated his ability to contribute both goals and energy in high-intensity systems.
Head coach Jesse Marsch is believed to value Nelson’s pressing ability and tactical discipline, qualities that fit Canada’s aggressive playing style heading into the World Cup.
Nelson has been part of Canada’s broader national team setup for much of the past year, featuring in several international fixtures and only missing the March window due to injury.
With the tournament approaching, his inclusion adds depth and fresh attacking options as Canada prepare for their Group Stage campaign.
