Manchester United secured their return to the UEFA Champions League after a late goal from Kobbie Mainoo sealed a 3-2 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Mainoo struck in the 77th minute, finishing calmly after capitalising on a loose clearance from Alexis Mac Allister to hand United all three points in a dramatic encounter.

The win confirms United’s place in next season’s Champions League, capping a strong run of form under interim manager Michael Carrick.

United made a fast start, taking a 2-0 lead inside the opening stages through goals from Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko. The hosts dominated early proceedings, creating multiple chances and exploiting space in Liverpool’s defence.

Liverpool responded after the break, with Dominik Szoboszlai pulling one back before Cody Gakpo equalised following a defensive error by United goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

With momentum shifting towards the visitors, Mainoo delivered the decisive moment, scoring the winner to secure a league double over Liverpool for the first time in a decade.

The victory ensures Manchester United finish in the top four, confirming their return to Europe’s elite club competition.

Carrick’s side have enjoyed a strong run, recording 10 wins, two draws, and two defeats in his 14 matches in charge. The result strengthens his case for the permanent managerial role.
