Manica Diamonds and Chicken Inn FC played out a 0-0 draw in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League Matchday 5 encounter at GreenFuel Arena on Thursday, in a match that produced effort and intensity but lacked the decisive finishing touch.
Chicken Inn began the match on the front foot, showing attacking intent in the early exchanges. They forced an early corner and continued to press, with Hapmo testing the Manica Diamonds goalkeeper with a firm effort inside the opening minutes. The hosts, however, remained organised at the back and dealt well with the early pressure.
Manica Diamonds responded with quick transitions and set-piece situations, including long throws and corners, but struggled to break down a disciplined Chicken Inn defence. The game gradually settled into a midfield contest, with both sides cancelling each other out and limiting clear scoring opportunities.
The visitors appeared more threatening going forward, with combinations involving Innocent, Rendo and Kawe creating moments of promise. However, their final delivery often lacked precision, allowing Manica Diamonds to clear their lines.
At the other end, Manica Diamonds relied on long balls and occasional attacking bursts, but were repeatedly denied by a resolute defensive display from Chicken Inn, with Mvula and Itai standing firm.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Chicken Inn pushing for a breakthrough. Binwell came close with a header, while Innocent and Hapmo combined well in attack, but the finishing touch remained elusive.
Manica Diamonds also had opportunities, particularly from set-pieces, including a late free kick just outside the area, but Chicken Inn goalkeeper Mvula was equal to the task, producing a confident save to keep the scores level.
As the match entered its closing stages, both sides pushed for a late winner, but solid defending and a lack of clinical finishing ensured the contest ended in a stalemate.
Speaking after the match, Chicken Inn coach Tonderai Ndiraya did not hide his disappointment, describing the performance as one of the poorest from his side so far this season.
“In the five games we have played so far this could be one of the worst in those five.””
The result leaves Manica Diamonds rooted at the bottom of the table in 18th position, still searching for their first win and goal of the campaign. Chicken Inn, meanwhile, drop to ninth place following the draw, despite extending their unbeaten run against the hosts.
Attention now turns to the next round of fixtures, with Chicken Inn set to face FC Hunters on Monday, while Manica Diamonds will travel to take on CAPS United as they continue their search for improved form.
