PSL Golden Boot Race Intensifies Ahead of Matchday 14

Hope

The Castle Lager Premier Soccer League Golden Boot race is beginning to take shape ahead of Matchday 14, with Ralph Kawondera maintaining a narrow lead at the top of the scoring charts.

The Herentals football club striker currently leads the standings with eight goals from 13 matches and has contributed to nearly half of the 17 goals scored by his side so far this season. Kawondera will look to continue his scoring form when Herentals face Simba Bhora at Rufaro Stadium on Saturday.

Despite being deployed in different positions during the season, including three appearances at centre back, the versatile 35-year-old has maintained his attacking influence and stayed ahead in the scoring charts.

Kawondera’s closest challenger remains Khama Billiat of Scottland, who sits second with six goals. Billiat started the season strongly with four goals in his opening four matches, but his form has dipped in recent weeks, with the experienced forward managing to score twice in his last seven appearances for Mabviravira.

Scottland will be hoping Billiat rediscovers his scoring touch when they travel to face Chicken Inn at Barbourfields Stadium on Saturday.

Also tied on six goals is reigning golden boot winner Washington Navaya of Hardrock FC, who is seeking to retain the award for a second consecutive season.

However, Navaya faces stiff competition from Jairos Kasondo of Dynamos FC, who is level with him on six goals as the race intensifies heading into the second half of the season.

Just behind the leading pack is Marve Mukumba of Ngezi Platinum Stars with four goals. Mukumba’s contributions have played an important role in his side’s strong campaign, with Ngezi currently sitting third on the league standings while remaining unbeaten.

Completing the top eight scorers charts are Frank Agyemang of Dynamos, Walter Musona of Scottland and Melikhaya Ncube of Bulawayo Chiefs FC, who are all tied on four goals.

Ncube has made an impressive start since joining Bulawayo Chiefs from Highlanders FC at the beginning of the season. The midfielder has played 12 out of 13 games so far for the side this season, quickly establishing himself as a key player following the club’s return to top-flight football.

With 20 matches still remaining in the season, the golden boot race still remains wide open, as the season approaches its halfway stage.
