Zimbabwe lifted the Mukuru Four-Nation Tournament title after edging Zambia 1-0 in a tightly contested final played at Obed Itani Chilume Stadium in Francistown on Tuesday night.
The Warriors had to dig deep in a match that offered few clear-cut chances, with Zambia looking dangerous in the early stages and forcing a save from goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze. Zimbabwe gradually grew into the game, with Macauley Bonne and Bill Antonio both coming close but failing to beat the Zambian goalkeeper.
After a goalless first half, Zimbabwe returned with more intent, creating better chances as the game progressed. However, Zambia remained resolute at the back, with goalkeeper Joseph Mulenga putting in a solid performance to keep his side in the contest.
The breakthrough finally came in the 87th minute when substitute Junior Zindoga’s delivery caused problems in the box, resulting in a Zambian defender turning the ball into his own net.
Zimbabwe held on to secure the win and cap off a strong tournament, having earlier defeated hosts Botswana 3-0 in the semi-finals, while Zambia had progressed after a penalty shootout victory over Malawi.
The triumph marks Zimbabwe’s first piece of silverware in eight years, their last coming in 2018 when they won the COSAFA Cup under Sunday “Mhofu” Chidzambwa.
Coach Marian Marinica described the victory as an important step for the team as they continue building towards tougher competitions ahead.
