Andoni Iraola Hails Bournemouth’s Historic European Qualification

AFC Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola has described Bournemouth’s qualification for European football as “incredible” after the club secured a historic top-seven Premier League finish for the first time in their 127-year history.

Bournemouth confirmed continental qualification following a 1-1 draw against Manchester City on Tuesday night, a result that guaranteed at least Europa League football next season.

The achievement came during Iraola’s final home game in charge at the Vitality Stadium before his expected departure in the summer, with supporters giving the Spanish coach an emotional send-off after the final whistle.

“What a night it has been,” said Iraola after the match.

“Probably the only thing you would change is the result because I think we should have won the game 2-0 or 3-0, probably.

“But it doesn’t change so much our position in terms of European qualification. We have Europa League already guaranteed and even a small chance to fight for the Champions League until the end.”

Iraola also praised the atmosphere created by the Bournemouth supporters during one of the biggest nights in the club’s history.

“I think we played so well. It’s a game where there is a lot to play for and you have some nerves but I was enjoying the game,” he said.

“I was watching the supporters bouncing, an incredible atmosphere. The European qualification is incredible but the moments we will remember from this night are even more important.”

Bournemouth will now head into their final match of the season against Nottingham Forest still with a slim chance of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League depending on other results.

The Cherries could still break into the top five if they win and results elsewhere favour them, while another possible route could open should Aston Villa win the Europa League and finish fifth in the Premier League standings.

Regardless of the final standings, Bournemouth have already secured their place in history by reaching European football for the very first time.
