Zimbabwean Athletes Shine on US Collegiate Circuit with Record-Breaking Performances
Hope

Zimbabwe’s emerging track and field stars delivered outstanding performances across various meets in the United States over the past week, underlining the country’s growing presence on the international athletics stage.
Middle-distance runner Privilege Chikara continued her fine early-season form with an impressive showing at the Pepsi Florida Relays in Gainesville, Florida. Chikara clocked a personal best time of 2:03.44 in the women’s 800m, finishing second in her heat. The time improves on her previous best of 2:03.83 set during last year’s NCAA Division I East First Rounds.
She also registered another personal best in the 1500m, posting 4:18.18 — further evidence of her consistency and progression this season.

Elsewhere, fellow Zimbabwean athlete Nontokozo Ncube made headlines at the LSU Battle on the Bayou in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Competing in her debut season for the University of Minnesota, Ncube recorded a personal best time of 2:04.72 in the women’s 800m.
Her performance ranks as the second-fastest in the university’s history, placing her just behind former Olympic bronze medalist Heather Dorniden’s longstanding record of 2:01.05. Ncube finished fifth in a highly competitive race won by Veronica Hargrave in 2:02.08.
With Zimbabwe’s national 800m record of 2:00.49 — set by Julia Sakara in 1998 — still intact, Ncube’s rapid improvement signals strong potential to challenge the mark in the near future.

Meanwhile, sprint sensation Tapiwanashe Makarawu produced a historic run at the Miramar Invitational in Florida, setting a new African record in the 150m with a remarkable time of 14.96 seconds.
Makarawu finished second in the race behind Jamaican star Kishane Thompson, who set a world record time of 14.92 seconds in a thrilling contest.
The trio’s performances highlight a promising wave of Zimbabwean talent excelling on the US collegiate circuit, raising hopes for strong international representation in upcoming global competitions.
