Jannik Sinner Begins French Open Redemption Mission With Dominant Opening-Round Victory

World number one Jannik Sinner made an emphatic start to his 2026 French Open campaign on Tuesday night, cruising past French wildcard Clement Tabur in straight sets to extend his remarkable winning streak to 30 matches.

Returning to Roland Garros less than a year after suffering a heartbreaking final defeat to Carlos Alcaraz, Sinner showed no signs of hesitation as he dismantled Tabur 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

The Italian controlled the contest from the baseline throughout the evening, striking 40 winners while never facing a single break point in another polished display from the world’s top-ranked player.

Sinner’s latest victory improves his clay-court record in 2026 to a perfect 18-0 and places him alongside Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic as only the fourth man this century to achieve a 30-match winning streak.

The 24-year-old has been unstoppable in recent months, winning ATP Masters 1000 titles in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo, Madrid and Rome, while recently completing the Career Golden Masters — becoming only the second and youngest player after Djokovic to achieve the feat.

Despite last year’s painful defeat in the Roland Garros final, Sinner admitted he was happy to return to Paris.

“I’m very happy to be back here,” Sinner said after the match.

“It’s a very special place and I have great memories overall. First-round matches are never easy, but it’s even more special to start the tournament during a night session, so thank you all for staying out.”

With Alcaraz absent through injury, Sinner enters the tournament as the leading favourite for the title and is now chasing another historic achievement — becoming only the seventh man in the Open Era to complete the Career Grand Slam.

The four-time Grand Slam champion will next face Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the second round after the Argentine defeated Jacob Fearnley in straight sets.
