Alexander Zverev continued his strong start at Roland-Garros 2026 on Tuesday night after defeating Tomas Machac in straight sets to reach the third round in Paris.
The German produced another dominant display to secure a 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 victory over the Czech player, who struggled with a left foot injury during the match.
After already easing past Benjamin Bonzi in the opening round, Zverev once again looked sharp and efficient as he moved comfortably through the contest.
Machac was expected to provide a serious challenge for the world No. 3, but the match changed dramatically after the Czech began struggling physically during the second set. Despite obvious discomfort and limited movement, Machac chose to continue playing until the end of the match.
Zverev adjusted his tactics intelligently, using repeated drop shots to exploit his opponent’s restricted movement while remaining aggressive from the baseline.
The 2024 Roland-Garros finalist finished the match with an impressive 18 aces and 41 winners, while also conserving valuable energy ahead of the tougher stages of the tournament.
Speaking after the victory, Zverev admitted it was difficult facing an injured opponent despite the comfortable result.
“For one set, we played at a very high level. I’m happy to win in straight sets, but it’s never easy to play against an injured opponent because you still have to get the job done.”
The German also wished Machac a quick recovery following the match.
“I hope it’s nothing too serious for him.”
Zverev will now face Quentin Halys in the third round after the Frenchman won an all-French battle against Ugo Humbert earlier in the day.
The German currently leads the head-to-head against Halys 1-0 following victory in Miami earlier this season.
