Kaia century powers Rocks to Pro50 glory

Hope

Southern Rocks secured the Pro50 Championship title with a convincing eight-wicket victory over Mountaineers on Saturday, thanks with Innocent Kaia century proving a major difference.

Having topped the standings during the league phase, Rocks delivered a disciplined all-round performance in the final at Masvingo Sports Club. They first restricted the defending champions to 230 all out before completing a comfortable chase.

Mountaineers made a positive start after being put in to bat, with openers Joylord Gumbie and Alistair Frost settling early and capitalising on the new ball.

Frost scored 25 off 22 deliveries before he was dismissed by Roy Kaia, caught at mid-on while attempting an attacking shot.

Nick Welch contributed 23, but the innings lost momentum during the middle overs as Rocks applied pressure with tight bowling.

Gumbie top-scored with a patient 51 from 110 balls. However, his cautious approach did little to lift the scoring rate as Mountaineers struggled to accelerate.

The match shifted decisively when Matthew Campbell claimed three quick wickets, including Wellington Masakadza and Timycen Maruma. Mountaineers slipped from a stable position to 151 for six.

A late partnership between Spencer Magodo (34) and Michael Frost (22) provided brief resistance, but seamer Shelton Mazvitorera halted the progress with two wickets in consecutive overs.

Mountaineers were eventually bowled out for 230 with four balls remaining. Mazvitorera finished as the pick of the bowlers with figures of three for 31.

In reply, Rocks built their chase on a strong opening stand between Campbell and Kaia.

The pair shared a 148-run partnership for the first wicket, effectively putting the result beyond doubt.

Campbell made 67 before being dismissed by Prosper Mugeri, but Kaia remained composed at the crease. He brought up his century from 106 deliveries with controlled and confident strokeplay.

Kaia finished unbeaten on 112 from 113 balls, hitting 15 fours and a six, as Rocks comfortably reached the target. He was supported by Panashe Taruvinga (22) and Roy Kaia (21 not out).

The victory completed a dominant campaign for Southern Rocks, who also won the 2025/26 Logan Cup to secure a domestic double.
