Zimbabwe Cricket has appointed former national team captain Mary-Anne Musonda as Team Manager of the Zimbabwe Senior Women’s National Team, marking a new chapter in her long association with the women’s game in the country.

The appointment comes only weeks after Musonda officially announced her retirement from all forms of cricket, bringing an end to a remarkable career that spanned nearly two decades of service to Zimbabwe Women.

The 34-year-old is expected to bring leadership, experience, professionalism and strong knowledge of the game into the national team environment after years of representing Zimbabwe as both a player and captain.

Zimbabwe Cricket Managing Director Givemore Makoni confirmed the appointment, describing it as an important step in the continued growth and rebuilding of the Zimbabwe Women’s national side.

Musonda last represented Zimbabwe during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 in Abu Dhabi before eventually stepping away from playing after struggling with injury.

Throughout her career, the right-handed middle-order batter established herself as one of the most influential figures in Zimbabwe Women’s cricket history.

She featured in 16 Women’s One-Day Internationals, scoring one century and one half-century, while also playing 58 Women’s T20 Internationals where she registered five half-centuries following Zimbabwe Women gaining official international status.

Before Zimbabwe Women attained official status, Musonda had already represented the country in more than 100 matches including regional qualifiers and bilateral competitions during the formative years of women’s cricket in Zimbabwe.

One of the defining moments of her career came in October 2021 when she became the first Zimbabwean woman to score an international century after producing an unbeaten 103 against Ireland Women at Harare Sports Club.

That innings guided Zimbabwe Women to a memorable four-wicket victory and remains one of the landmark achievements in the history of Zimbabwe women’s cricket.

Having been part of the national set-up since 2006, Musonda’s journey mirrors the growth and development of women’s cricket in Zimbabwe over the years.
