Mexico vs South Africa – Kick-off Time, Team News, How to Watch FIFA World Cup Opener

By Luckybets Media Team

South Africa will kick off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a high-profile Group A clash against Mexico in Mexico City on Thursday, June 11, in a fixture that marks a symbolic return to where their modern World Cup journey began.

The encounter comes exactly 16 years after Siphiwe Tshabalala’s iconic strike lit up the 2010 World Cup opener between the two nations at Soccer City. That match ended 1-1 after Rafael Márquez’s equaliser, with both sides going on to experience mixed fortunes in the tournament, as South Africa exited at the group stage.

Hugo Broos’ South Africa head into this tournament as underdogs once again, with preparations disrupted by inconsistent results in recent friendlies. Bafana Bafana played out a goalless draw against Nicaragua before a 1-1 draw with Jamaica in Pachuca, a performance the coach described as below expectations. Broos has stressed the need for greater intensity and mental strength as his side prepares for a tough opening test.

Mexico, meanwhile, arrive in strong form, enjoying an eight-match unbeaten run in 2026 friendlies. Their recent victories include wins over Ghana (2-0), Australia (1-0), and Serbia (5-1), giving them confidence heading into their home World Cup opener.

South Africa have fitness concerns in defence, with left-back Aubrey Modiba facing a late assessment after injury concerns. Wingers Thapelo Morena and Mohau Nkota were also unavailable due to injury, limiting Broos’ attacking options. Mexico head coach Javier Aguirre, who previously faced South Africa in the 2010 opener, will be without goalkeeper Luis Ángel Malagón and midfielder Marcel Ruiz, both ruled out through injury and missing from the final squad.

The match will kick off at 9 p.m. at the Estadio Azteca (Estadio Banorte). The fixture is expected to attract global attention.

In South Africa, the match will be shown live on SuperSport and SABC. In Zimbabwe, viewers can follow the action on SuperSport, SABC, ZBC, and Azam TV.

Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa is the only player involved in both the 2010 and 2026 World Cup squads, although he was an unused substitute in the 2010 opener. Mexico enter the tournament with six wins and two draws from eight friendlies in 2026, while South Africa have recorded three draws and two defeats in their last five matches, including AFCON 2025 elimination.

With history, pressure, and expectation converging, both teams will be eager to begin their World Cup campaign with a strong statement in Mexico City.

Group A opponents

Mexico and South Africa are joined in Group A by South Korea and Czechia, with the top two teams progressing automatically to the Round of 32.
