Victor Wembanyama will travel with the San Antonio Spurs to Portland but must complete the NBA concussion protocol before being cleared for Game 3.
The 7-foot-4 French center suffered a concussion during the Spurs’ Game 2 loss on Tuesday night to Portland, exiting the match in the second quarter.
Game 3 of the series, currently tied at 1-1, is scheduled for Friday in Portland, with Game 4 set for Sunday at the same venue.
Speaking during a pre-match press conference on Thursday, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said that Wembanyama is recovering but did not comfirm if he will be available for selection.
Under NBA rules, players in concussion protocol must pass a series of stages before returning to action. These include light physical activity such as stationary cycling, jogging, and non-contact basketball drills. Each phase is followed by medical and neurological assessments.
Wembanyama’s recovery will also be measured against his pre-season baseline neurological tests before he is cleared to advance further in the process.
Meanwhile, Wembanyama has been a standout performer this season, averaging 25 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and a league-leading 3.1 blocks per game.
