Zimbabwe national teams in line for boost after CAF–UEFA agreement

Hope

Zimbabwe’s junior and women’s national football teams are expected to benefit from a new development partnership between the Confederation of African Football (Confederation of African Football) and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), aimed at strengthening football structures across both continents.

The agreement was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding signed by CAF president Patrice Motsepe and UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin, marking a renewed commitment to cooperation in key areas of football development.

The partnership focuses on youth football, women’s football, grassroots development, coaching education, refereeing standards, and broader institutional capacity building within member associations. According to CAF, the initiative is designed to promote long-term growth of the game by sharing expertise and resources between Africa and Europe.

In a statement following the signing, CAF president Patrice Motsepe highlighted the importance of collaboration between the two governing bodies.

“This partnership with UEFA includes youth and women’s football, development, the education and training of coaches and referees, the enhancement of governance and institutional development,” Motsepe said. “It also reflects CAF and UEFA’s shared vision of using football as a tool to bring together and unite the people of our two continents.”

UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin echoed similar sentiments, stressing the focus on expanding opportunities for young players and strengthening women’s football.

“This Memorandum of Understanding reflects our shared commitment to expanding opportunities for boys and girls in youth football, while harnessing the power of the game to advance women’s football and promote women’s health and wellbeing,” Čeferin said. “By working closely with CAF, we aim to invest in people, share expertise and strengthen football’s positive and lasting impact on communities across both continents.”

The development is expected to benefit national teams across Africa, including Zimbabwe’s junior and women’s sides, through improved access to technical training, development programs, and institutional support.

Football stakeholders in Zimbabwe are hopeful that the agreement will help strengthen pathways for young players and improve competitiveness at international level, particularly for teams like the Mighty Warriors who continue to rebuild for future global competitions.

The partnership marks another step in deepening ties between African and European football, with long-term implications for the development of the sport across all levels.
