SINNER CHASES HISTORY IN MADRID OPEN FINAL AGAINST ZVEREV

Hope

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner will bid for another slice of tennis history when he faces Alexander Zverev in the final of the Mutua Madrid Open today.

Sinner booked his place in the championship match with a commanding 6-2, 6-4 victory over Arthur Fils in Friday’s semi-final, extending his remarkable winning streak to 22 matches.

The Italian is now one victory away from becoming the first player in ATP history to win five consecutive Masters 1000 titles. His current run includes triumphs in Paris last year, followed by titles at Indian Wells, Miami and Monte-Carlo this season.

A win in Madrid would see Sinner surpass the previous record of four straight Masters 1000 titles, jointly held by Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

The 24-year-old has already etched his name into the record books this week by becoming the youngest player to reach the final of all nine ATP Masters 1000 events. He joins an elite group that includes Roger Federer, Djokovic and Nadal.

Sinner has also become only the third man to reach the final of the first four Masters 1000 tournaments in a single season, matching feats previously achieved by Federer in 2006 and Nadal in 2011.

Standing in his way is two-time Madrid champion Zverev, who advanced to his fourth final in the Spanish capital after defeating Alexander Blockx in straight sets.

The German will be aiming to reclaim the title he previously won in 2018 and 2021, while also ending Sinner’s extraordinary run at Masters level.

Their meeting adds another chapter to one of the ATP Tour’s emerging rivalries. It will mark the fifth consecutive Masters 1000 event in which the two have faced each other.

With history on the line and two of the world’s finest players set to clash, today’s final promises to be a compelling showdown in Madrid.
