Ukrainian star Marta Kostyuk produced a career-defining performance on Saturday to win her first WTA 1000 title, defeating No. 9 seed Mirra Andreeva 6-3, 7-5 in the final of the Mutua Madrid Open.
The victory marked a major breakthrough for Kostyuk, who extended her outstanding clay-court run to 12 consecutive wins, underlining her growing reputation on the surface ahead of the French Open.
The 22-year-old delivered a composed and aggressive display, controlling key moments of the match to secure a straight-sets win in one hour and 21 minutes. She dropped just one set throughout the entire tournament, with a standout semi-final win over Anastasia Potapova and earlier victories over top-ranked opposition including Jessica Pegula.
Kostyuk’s triumph makes her the first player ranked outside the top 20 to win the Madrid Open since 2010, and she is set to rise to a new career-high ranking of world No. 15.
For Andreeva, the defeat ends a strong run in WTA 1000 finals, having previously lifted titles in Dubai and Indian Wells. The 17-year-old Russian struggled to maintain consistency in key moments, including a costly double fault at a crucial stage in the second set that allowed Kostyuk to take control.
Despite the disappointment, Andreeva acknowledged her opponent’s form and congratulated Kostyuk on a deserved victory.
Kostyuk, visibly emotional after sealing the win, described the achievement as the result of years of persistence and consistency, marking one of the biggest moments of her professional career.
The result strengthens Kostyuk’s status as one of the rising forces on the WTA Tour, with her form on clay now making her a serious contender heading into Roland Garros.
