Iga Swiatek began her quest for a fifth French Open title with a commanding 6-1, 6-2 victory over British wildcard Mimi Xu Jones in the opening round at Roland Garros on Monday.

The world No. 3 needed just over an hour to secure the win on her preferred clay surface as she continued her pursuit of a seventh Grand Slam singles title.

Swiatek, who recently added respected coach Francis Roig to her team, looked comfortable throughout the contest despite brief resistance from the 17-year-old wildcard.

Roig is well known for previously working with Rafael Nadal and Emma Raducanu.Speaking after the match, Swiatek said she was pleased with her opening performance.“I’m happy with how I started the tournament.

Playing on clay always gives me confidence and I felt comfortable physically and mentally,” she said. The Polish star quickly settled into the match by using her movement and heavy topspin to dictate rallies from the baseline.

Although Jones managed to briefly threaten by breaking serve in the second set, Swiatek immediately regained control with her trademark consistency and aggressive returning.

A four-time champion in Paris, Swiatek once again demonstrated why she is considered one of the strongest clay-court players in women’s tennis.

Her deep groundstrokes and relentless pressure forced several errors from Jones, who struggled to cope with the pace and accuracy of the former world No. 1.Jones showed flashes of promise during the second set and earned two breaks of serve during the match.

The teenager also managed her first service hold late in the contest, drawing applause from the crowd on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

However, Swiatek remained composed and closed out the match comfortably by holding serve to 15.

The victory sends Swiatek into the second round where she will face Sara Bejlek, who advanced after defeating former US Open champion Sloane Stephens in straight sets.

Swiatek is aiming to become one of the few women in the Open Era to win five French Open singles titles. She previously lifted the trophy in 2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024.
