Zimbabwe Women High Performance Centre suffered their first defeat of the 2026 Kwibuka Women’s T20 Invitational in Rwanda after going down to Nigeria Women by 7 wickets on Thursday.
The defeat brought an end to Zimbabwe HPC’s winning momentum after they had enjoyed an impressive Wednesday, where they secured back-to-back victories over Rwanda Women and Brazil Women. Those wins had seen the side emerge as one of the early contenders in the tournament.
Coming into the match full of confidence, Zimbabwe HPC were hoping to extend their unbeaten run, but Nigeria Women produced a strong all-round performance to claim a convincing victory.
Despite the setback, Zimbabwe HPC showed determination throughout the contest and continued to compete against one of the stronger sides in the competition. However, Nigeria Women ultimately proved too strong on the day, chasing down their target with seven wickets to spare.
The result marks Zimbabwe HPC’s first loss of the tournament but does little to take away from the positive start they have made in Rwanda. The team has already demonstrated its potential through strong performances, including the memorable victory over Brazil Women that featured a brilliant century from Nyasha Gwanzura.
The coaching staff will now be looking for a quick response as the tournament continues, with valuable lessons expected to be taken from the defeat.
Zimbabwe Women High Performance Centre will have an opportunity to bounce back when they face Brazil Women on Friday at 13:30 CAT.
With several matches still remaining in the tournament, Zimbabwe HPC remains firmly focused on building momentum, gaining experience, and returning to winning ways in their next outing.
