Zimbabwe Women High Performance Centre strengthened their bid for a place in the final of the 2026 Kwibuka Women’s T20 Invitational Tournament after producing a commanding all-round display to defeat Nigeria Women by 37 runs in Kigali on Wednesday.
Coming into the match looking to respond positively after their defeat to hosts Rwanda Women, Zimbabwe HPC showed resilience and determination to return to winning ways in a contest that could prove decisive in the race for a place in Saturday’s final.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Zimbabwe HPC posted a competitive total of 126-7 from their 20 overs. The innings was built around disciplined batting, with the Zimbabwe side finding valuable runs throughout the order while successfully navigating periods of pressure from the Nigerian bowling attack.
Although wickets fell at regular intervals, Zimbabwe HPC managed to maintain momentum and ensure they finished with a score that would challenge Nigeria on a surface that continued to offer assistance to bowlers.
In reply, Nigeria Women never fully settled into their chase as Zimbabwe HPC’s bowlers quickly established control of the contest. The disciplined bowling unit consistently applied pressure, restricting scoring opportunities and forcing mistakes from the Nigerian batters.
Regular breakthroughs prevented Nigeria from building meaningful partnerships, with Zimbabwe HPC maintaining their intensity in the field and refusing to allow their opponents any route back into the game. As the required run rate continued to climb, the pressure mounted on Nigeria, who eventually collapsed to 89 all out in just 15.1 overs.
The convincing victory underlined the growing confidence within the Zimbabwe HPC squad and demonstrated their ability to bounce back strongly after disappointment. It was another encouraging performance in a tournament where the team has continued to show significant progress against quality international opposition.
The result keeps Zimbabwe HPC firmly in contention for a place in the final and sets up a crucial encounter against Malawi Women on Thursday. Victory in that match would secure a place in Saturday’s championship decider and provide the Zimbabwe side with an opportunity to compete for the tournament title.
With confidence restored and momentum back on their side, Zimbabwe Women High Performance Centre will now focus on finishing the group stage strongly as they continue their pursuit of a place in the Kwibuka Women’s T20 Invitational final.
